Precision Brewing Made Simple

The Kalita Wave's unique flat-bottom design with three small drainage holes creates even extraction and consistent results, making it ideal for both beginners and experienced home baristas. Unlike cone-shaped drippers, the Kalita Wave's geometry encourages a more uniform coffee bed, reducing channeling and improving flavor clarity. The signature wave filters prevent contact between the dripper and filter, ensuring stable water temperature throughout the brew. Perfect for showcasing the nuanced flavors of single-origin beans and light to medium roasts. The forgiving brew method makes it easier to achieve consistent results compared to other pour over coffee makers.

Kalita Wave FAQs

About

Is The kalita wave dishwasher safe?

Stainless steel and ceramic Kalita Wave drippers are generally dishwasher safe, though hand washing is recommended to preserve their finish. Glass models should be hand washed to prevent thermal shock. The Tsubame copper-plated models require hand washing only to maintain their beautiful patina. All models clean easily with warm water and mild soap.

Kalita Wave vs V60: What's the difference?

The Kalita Wave has a flat bottom with three small holes, while the V60 has a cone shape with one large hole and spiral ribs. The Kalita Wave is more forgiving and produces consistent results with less technique dependency, making it ideal for beginners. The V60 offers more control and can produce brighter, more complex flavors but requires more precise pouring technique and grind consistency.

What grind size should use with the Kalita wave?

Use a medium grind for Kalita Wave, slightly finer than Chemex but coarser than espresso—similar to granulated sugar texture. The flat-bottom design is forgiving with grind size, but medium grind provides optimal extraction and brew time. Adjust finer for faster brews or coarser if your coffee is brewing too slowly or tastes bitter.

How do i use the kalita wave?

Place a Kalita Wave filter in the dripper and rinse with hot water. Add 20-25g of medium-grind coffee for the 155, or 25-30g for the 185. Start with a 30-40 second bloom using twice the coffee weight in water (200-205°F). Pour in slow, circular motions in 3-4 stages until reaching your target volume—typically 1:15 to 1:16 coffee-to-water ratio. Total brew time should be 2.5-3.5 minutes.
